RICHMOND, Ky. — Model Laboratory Schools announce the release of Kentucky’s 2023-24 Assessment and Accountability Results alongside the Kentucky Department of Education’s release to the public on Thursday, October 3. These results provide a comprehensive overview of student achievement and school performance through Kentucky’s multifaceted school accountability system.
Kentucky’s accountability system goes beyond simple academic performance, incorporating key indicators such as Status (current-year performance) and Change, which measures the progress schools make compared to the previous year. Under state statute KRS 158.6455, both Status and Change are given equal weight in determining a school’s overall performance. This second year of incorporating Change has introduced some fluctuations, particularly in schools that consistently perform at high levels.
"Our school's performance rating reflects much more than just the Kentucky State Assessment (KSA) scores alone," said John Williamson, Superintendent of Model Laboratory Schools. "We recognize the importance of both the current year’s results and the progress we make year over year."
The Kentucky Summative Assessments (KSA) form the basis of this evaluation. These tests measure students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 on reading and mathematics, while other subjects like science, social studies, and writing are assessed at specific grade levels once per school level.
Kentucky’s accountability system uses a five-tier, color-coded rating system to provide an overall performance score for each school and district, ranging from blue (highest) to red (lowest). This year’s results for Model Laboratory Schools show both successes and areas for improvement:
Elementary School: Model’s elementary school achieved the highest possible overall rating of blue, reflecting excellence in reading and math, as well as a positive school climate and safety.
High School: High school students at Model ranked among the top ten statewide in academic achievement alone, earning a green rating. The school also received high marks for post-secondary readiness.
Middle School: Middle school performance experienced a decline, leading to a yellow rating. This indicates that certain areas need more attention to support student success.
“While we take pride in many of our results, we all recognize that continual improvement is part of realizing a world-class education. All of us at Model are committed to a world-class education for all students,” Williamson emphasized.
Model Laboratory Schools are actively developing strategies to strengthen school community support to help all students achieve their highest potential. The administration is also calling on families to join in partnership to support students by ensuring consistent attendance, reinforcing homework and core skills, and closely monitoring progress using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
Model Laboratory Schools’ school profile will be made publicly available on the new School Report Card dashboard, projected to launch on November 20, 2024.
"We thank our families for choosing Model Laboratory Schools for their child’s education," Williamson added. "Together, we will continue striving for excellence in all areas and supporting the success of every student."
