The Kentucky Department of Education released the annual Kentucky School Report Card for the 2022-2023 academic year on Tuesday, October 31, with Model Laboratory Schools at Eastern Kentucky University rating among the highest in the state.

Model High School earned a top-rated title with the third-highest rating among Kentucky high schools. Model rated 91.9 overall for the No. 3 rank, which is two spots higher than its 2021-2022 accountability rating.

“Our performance in the state’s accountability system is one to celebrate,” Model Laboratory Schools Superintendent John Williamson said, “We continue to defend Model’s tradition of excellence, and I commend our entire school community for that.”

The overall performance rating color is based on a score that is determined by combining data from all available indicators, including the 2022-2023 assessment scores.

Model High’s Class of 2024 was assessed in multiple content areas while in Grade 11, but current Seniors’ performance on the social studies, science, editing and mechanics, and on-demand writing assessments earned top rank with a 99.2 overall combined rating – the highest in the state of Kentucky.

In Kentucky’s accountability system, schools are categorized on a combination of academic and school-quality indicators and measures. Using data from the 2022-2023 school year, Kentucky’s accountability system provides a color-coded overall performance rating for each school and district, as well as the state, by level. Overall performance ratings are reported with five color levels: blue (highest), green, yellow, orange, and red (lowest).

Model High was the only school in the region to achieve blue status; in fact, it shares the accolade with only 23 other Kentucky high schools.

Model Elementary also achieved a blue rating and is ranked in the top 50 elementary schools out of the 719 total. Model Elementary improved its scores exponentially from the 2021-2022 accountability ratings by jumping from a 68.3 to a 90.9 overall rating for 2022-2023.

Model Middle received a 70.3 rating and is rated at the green level, which is higher than the state’s average and its prior rating; however, it still maintained to be a top 75 middle school.

“It is great to have the majority of our students performing in the highest category,” Superintendent Williamson continued, “This is a tribute and testament to the entire Model community: our parents who value a quality education, our teachers who are committed to student learning, and our students who have been exceptionally motivated to show their achievement.”
