In the fall, a Model legacy received a high honor at the 2022 KHSAA Girls' Soccer State Tournament. Former Athletic Director and Coach Barb Shafer was honored by the Kentucky High School Soccer Coaches Association as a Kentucky Girls' High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee.
Barb Shafer was Model's Athletic Director for over two decades from 1993-2019. Shafer initiated the women’s soccer program at Model and was also named the Athletic Director of the Year by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in 2000. In 2022, Shafer was inducted into the Model Laboratory School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Alongside her work as Athletic Director, Shafer was also a dedicated soccer coach. As the Model girls' soccer head coach for 16 years, Coach Shafer amassed a record of 162-109-12. During that time, Coach Shafer's teams collected six district titles and two second-place finishes in the 11th Region. Coach Shafer was the Coach of the Year in 2006 and served the state as a member of the Soccer Advisory Committee for over a decade.
Shafer remains an active member of the Model community and often serves as a volunteer during school and community events. We are proud to have Barb Shafer in the Model Family; congratulations, Coach Shafer!
