Chris Evans Hire

Model Laboratory School at Eastern Kentucky University hired Chris Evans as the new Varsity Head Coach of the Boys’ Basketball program.

Evans is taking the reins of the program after the previous coach John Morgerson recently accepted the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School head coach position after four seasons with the Patriots.

Model will be led with knowledge and passion as Evans comes in as a former collegiate player with nine years of coaching experience throughout the 11th and 12th Regions.

“I am excited to be here, and I appreciate the opportunity from Coach Sutton and Dr. Hunt,” Evans said, “I think it is exciting to come in here: new facilities coming in the future, being in the All A which is new for me, and I know they have had success with their previous coaches. I am excited to see what the guys can do.”

Evans, originally from Rockcastle County, most recently coached at Great Crossing High School (Georgetown) where the team won the 41st District and advanced to the semifinals of the 11th Region in the 2022-2023 season as the Head Assistant Coach. Evans’ resumé also includes being Head Coach at Southern Middle School (Somerset) and Varsity Assistant Coach at Frederick Douglass High School (Lexington) for four years. While at Frederick Douglass, the team won three district titles and were the 11th Region Runners-Up two of the three years.

“I really like to develop and build teams. I like everything about coaching – building schedules, fundraising, every little detail with coaching,” Evans added, “With a small school like this, you have more of a hand on it all. I am excited to build it up and see what we can make it into.”

In addition to coaching school teams, Evans started an AAU program nine years ago and has built it up from one team to multiple teams. As the Director and owner of Kentucky Future Elite Inc., Evans has led the organization to one of the top player development and AAU programs in the region and state.

Evans broke down what mindset he brings to the court as he takes on a new team, “Basketball is basketball no matter where you go. The most important thing is teaching the fundamentals and building off that to the strengths of your team. ”

“It starts with the fundamentals, especially on the defensive side. If you teach the fundamentals, it is very small things that make something else happen,” Evan continued.

Evans has taught for seven years and currently works at Sandersville Elementary (Lexington) as a Special Education Teacher. Evans lives in Georgetown with his wife, Tabitha, and their pets, Presley and Priscilla.
